Democratic officials expressed anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and penalized "by death" following their release of a disputed video.
The clip, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly served in defense or intelligence capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this founding document," the representatives declared in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline improper directives, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that break the legal system or our national charter."
The video message seemed to prompt a angry response from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader released a joint statement denouncing the remarks.
"Political violence has no position in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our United States with tremendous national pride and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these unhinged social media posts and retract his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also issued a response.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who love this United States and swore an pledge to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that sacred duty."
"What's most telling is that the president views it punishable by execution for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the former president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of the legislature instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The GOP official also reportedly informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and determine all that."
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "You have active officials of the federal government who coordinated to orchestrate a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She stated: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
