Our team is analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.

Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
