Citizens have come together across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the proposal.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions said that an night meeting of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.

The source said the day's discussions finished without significant progress, because of differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are working hard to narrow the differences between the two sides.

Key Issues in Talks

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • Future governance of the territory

Public Reaction

In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose family member lived through the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No place seems like home any longer and until all the hostages are released no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel says 48 continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We must do every compromise needed for the abducted to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to finish in return for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the music event, mourners assembled to pay their respects.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of that day in the western district, sector and Nasr districts and in the eastern area of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the evening arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"We are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated two more victims had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the southern area, health workers said.
