It is deeply saddening’: the way thirty confined beluga whales are being used as pawns in row over animal cruelty.

Jelly Bean’s offspring Bertie Botts is an charming small “sweetheart”. The whale Orion – nicknamed “Onion Ring” – is a sizeable but guardian-like companion. Zephyr has “constant motion” and sways like a worm. Lillooet the beluga is the “loving presence” with a heart of gold.

A group of thirty captive marine mammals in a Canadian entertainment facility have been entangled in a disagreement between a defunct facility, local and national governments and advocacy groups.

But those working directly with the whales say the impassioned controversy over their destiny often fails to consider the complexities of the whales who, after living their entire lives in enclosed habitats, have been closely studied by the people who see them each day.

After the federal government prevented the transfer of the belugas to a foreign facility, the struggling attraction near Niagara Falls where they are held threatened to euthanize them unless the authorities funds the expense of their survival. Canada’s fisheries minister has refused that ultimatum, placing the thirty whales in an increasingly precarious circumstance.

Highly Cognitive Marine Mammals

Researchers say that belugas’ brain structure, along with their vocal imitation skills, cognitive challenges and group interactions indicate they are deeply intelligent creatures – something Kristy Burgess observed first-hand.

Burgess spent a significant period as a beluga trainer, a job that entailed gaining confidence of the aquatic animals.

“Building up those bonds over time takes a lot of regularity and a lot of care. At the start, they’re very wary of you,” she said. “Eventually, you gain shared confidence. And they start being more vulnerable with you. It’s just so wonderful and rewarding.”

Burgess knew the whales were highly intelligent, but she says she was nevertheless surprised by the details and unique traits in their characters. She cultivated a particular love for Eve and Cleopatra with different natures.

“Eve chose me. The other required effort,” she said. “Each altered the way I perceive relationships.”

Growing Opposition and Deteriorating Conditions

Burgess’s relationship with the whales developed against a backdrop of increasing societal concern to their captivity.

During her three years at the facility, multiple belugas and the park’s single killer whale, the orca, died. In all, nineteen belugas have perished at the park since recent years, a number which the park attributes to natural mortality, but which activists say points to the poor conditions in which they were housed.

The facility did not operate to the public over the recent season, but Burgess says she observed directly results of the cessation. “Structural materials is falling apart from the tanks because they’re degrading and not being maintained. The whales are inquisitive and so they pick it up and navigate with chunks in their mouth. It’s distressing to see.”

The facility did not reply to a questionnaire, but previously stated: “The whales … get far superior medical attention and around the clock supervision than any person in the United Kingdom, or other places.”

Fate in Limbo and Proposed Solutions

Burgess was dismissed from the park in recent months following the demise of Eos, an unwell beluga the caretakers had to put down. She said the facility thought details of the incident were shared to the news outlets and she was released shortly thereafter.

The uncertainty over the whales’ future has left Burgess and current and former trainers in distress. She says the facility’s threat to euthanize its whales is a bargaining chip and is a “extremely difficult” endeavor, adding any plans to put down even a individual beluga would require “considerable personnel”, trucks and machinery.

“It’s impossible in hell the employees would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess backs requests for the whales to be taken promptly from the facility, with its crumbling tanks and reduced personnel.

In late September, the nation’s government official turned down a request to send the whales to an overseas location.

“Granting the application would have meant a ongoing existence in confinement and a reversion to display for amusement,” the official stated. “As society, we know that marine mammals belong in the sea, not in tanks for our enjoyment. I could not in clear conscience authorize an transfer that would prolong the treatment these belugas have suffered.”

But Burgess said the official’s comments reflect a broader lack of awareness of the facts of existence for belugas raised in confinement.

“The people needs to understand these are whales that have lived entirely in captivity and they will need ongoing assistance for the foreseeable future,” she said. “Many just don’t realize that it’s not as easy as saying ‘end operations’.”

Alternative Habitat and Ongoing Debate

As decision makers struggle to find a answer, suggestions have been put forward, some of which have minimal feasibility. An idea called for the belugas to be let go into the open waters of Canada’s north – where whales are a key source of nourishment for local populations.

A suggested sanctuary in the region of Nova Scotia, which has received government approval, has shown to be most controversial. The prospective location, which includes 100 acres of enclosed sea water, is not yet built. Proponents remain optimistic that it could eventually represent a permanent resolution for eight of the whales.

But, the former trainer says, among staff she’s spoken with, there is “doubts there” about what she said is “simply an untested concept” in the whales’ fate.
