LeBron James was aware his monumental streak of scoring in double figures was at risk. At the decisive instant, however, it was not his focus.
The right decision meant distributing the ball – which is exactly what he did. Following that play, his remarkable run came to an end.
James's astounding run of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten ended during a recent game, when the league's career points king was limited to eight points in the Lakers' 123-120 win against Toronto. He delivered the clutch helper, finding Rui Hachimura to hit a triple to win the game.
“None,” James said when asked on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”
James could have tried to secure the contest – and extended the streak – on the final possession, but he chose to dish the ball to his teammate stationed in the corner. Hachimura sank it, and James celebrated immediately.
“Just playing basketball correctly. You always make the smart play,” James noted. That has always been my M.O.. It's how I was taught the game. I've played that way throughout my career.”
He is very conscious of how many points he has during a game,” commented Lakers coach JJ Redick. He acted like he’s done countless times.”
LeBron checked back into the floor for the final time with just over five minutes left, the win along with the historic run up for grabs. At that stage, he had only six points from 3 for 15 from the field at that juncture.
He got a bucket with under two minutes remaining to level the contest then missed a mid-range jumper at one minute to go that would have taken him to double digits.
He didn’t take another shot – even though he had a chance. A teammate found him as time wound down, but James decided to make the extra pass instead.
The basketball deities, when you play it the right way, they will repay you,” the coach concluded.
James's streak started over eighteen years ago. It was, by far the greatest such streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem recorded 787, and Karl Malone recorded of 575 games.
LeBron is such a team-oriented player,” said teammate Jake LaRavia.
“He’s just playing the game of basketball. He had the opportunity but because of who he is on the court and his personality off the court, he made the team play, dished to Hachimura and claimed the victory.”
Reaching double digits had typically been an afterthought well before the start of fourth quarters. During James’s streak, he had achieved double figures by the start of the fourth over twelve hundred times prior to Thursday.
But two of those rare single-digit games through three quarters had happened just days before: He recorded nine points going into the fourth against Dallas last week, followed by six points before the fourth quarter versus the Suns on Monday night.
He succeeded in preserve the record against the Suns. In the following contest, it finished – but he still rejoiced anyway.
I only ever make the best play. That is instinctive, regardless of outcome,” James said. “You make the right play, the basketball gods are always giving back to me.”
