New York state AG has introduced a new online portal urging residents to share visual evidence of ICE operations throughout New York. This move follows a shortly after a significant ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering mass outcry.
A US congressman disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were detained and detained for "nearly 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Rallies occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker deserves to exist without intimidation," the attorney general stated in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and recorded federal operations during the raid, I encourage you to provide that evidence with us. We are dedicated to assessing these submissions and evaluating any wrongdoings."
The form provides options to submit images and video footage of the operation, plus a section to indicate geographic details. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that states that "the attorney general might employ any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a court case or government document."
The Manhattan operation, which observers say included over fifty ICE personnel, occurred in a famous area of the city where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are regularly available en masse – frequently to visitors.
Recordings of the operation depict multiple hooded and equipped officers restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Crowds of locals pursued the personnel through the streets. An military-style transport was also seen moving along the Manhattan avenues.
During a midweek briefing organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, stated that four nationals were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for without cause." He noted the individuals were released on the following day with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman said. "This represents a militarized effort to incite tension. It is simply a excuse to incite violence for the government to deploy the military to halt violence that they themselves caused."
Anger over the immigration operation escalated – every political contenders denounced the operation, including the state leader.
"Yet again, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a contender wrote.
New York City community groups expressed outrage as well.
"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and protective equipment to focus on local sellers working to survive. This operation had no connection to public safety and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," said the head of a rights organization.
ICE policy forbids the detention of US citizens and the organization has claimed it does not take into custody citizens. However, external research has found that numerous US citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the existing leadership.
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in New York and nationwide recently.
A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Demonstrations against ICE are ubiquitous as are claims of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a document submitted by legal entities alleged healthcare failures of women with child in government custody.
