Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Uninterrupted Energy Supplies to India in Rebuff of American Pressure

The announcement came during a summit where both heads of state met in Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “immune to external pressure.”

A Signal For the West

Putin's comments, made on Friday, seemed to be a pointed rebuke at western countries, which have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into reducing its longstanding ties with Moscow. “Moscow remains a dependable supplier of energy resources and anything required for the growth of India’s industry,” the Russian president said. “We are ready to persist in ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of fuel for the booming Indian economy.”

Modi, while not mentioning oil explicitly, reinforced the sentiment by stating that “energy security has been a key and crucial cornerstone of the Indo-Russian cooperation.”

Questioning American Pressure

In the lead-up to the summit, via a TV appearance, Putin had criticized Washington's stance regarding India's oil imports. Putin stated, “If the US has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India enjoy the same privilege?”

This trip marked his maiden trip to India after the start of the situation in Ukraine, and both sides made a visible effort to project that the personal rapport between the two leaders persisted strongly.

A Warm Welcome

Taking an rare gesture, the Indian PM personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. The two embraced warmly as close allies before holding a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

Modi in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “built on mutual respect and profound confidence.”

Expanding Bilateral Ties

The bilateral summit produced several important deals in the fields of defence and economic cooperation. One significant result was the completion of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which targets to increase twofold mutual trade to one hundred billion dollars annually by the target year.

Furthermore vowed to restructure their military partnership. Even as Russia remains India's primary supplier of defence equipment, this role has reduced in recent years as India has sought broaden its sources.

Their communique emphasized cooperation in the joint production of cutting-edge military systems, although explicit reference of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.

Overall, both nations reiterated that during the “present intricate, difficult, and unpredictable global landscape, Russian-Indian ties stay strong to outside forces.”
