The star has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the United Kingdom's grassroots live music spots.

He was awarded the prize on mid-October as his latest record the album was declared the best record of the past year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was starting out," remarked Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting more than £100,000 on his live tour to help 38 local spots across Britain.

The money assisted locations that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties caused by floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted monetary aid in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from performances in major spaces backs the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

Two years ago, they donated their funds to the community center that nurtured their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also winners that year M People gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," said vocalist Small. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our success affected somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had protected two local spots in the South East, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in the city were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by a national body and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
