A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation battling entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose behind the attack is unknown and no one has been arrested have been made, according to authorities.
Police indicated that Stock was attacked as he was departing from a location in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the site supervising the setup of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.
"It is alleged the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.
CCTV footage reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and clad in what resembled a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.
It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the incident.
Key evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the location.
Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.
"We know they walked a long distance after the shooting, and officers have been attempting to locate them to determine their destination," remarked an authority figure.
His family member, a close relative, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," she said.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He spoke out bravely about subjects not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a profound tragedy."
She urged the citizens to not sharing disturbing footage from the scene, noting this was an deeply traumatic time, especially for Stock's children.
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
Beyond his media career, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including protective services, supplying elite guarding services and protecting major functions across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in building administration and participated in property reclaimations.
His death has shocked the country and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the government and various organizations.
A cabinet official said he was angry and saddened by Stock's untimely death.
"He spoke his truth without fear or favour. He even criticized me and my decisions as a public official. He was a pure example of who we ought to be," the minister added.
A public representative stated the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a trauma for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director noted that "DJ Warras was not merely a TV personality. He was a gifted communicator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought happiness and vitality to every performance. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the channel he worked for said Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his legacy "will endure".
