Biding twenty years for another chance to snaffle a prized business purchase is a luxury not afforded to most business leaders. The Rothermere family, though, adopts a more relaxed approach to time.
Whereas most business boards draw up five-year plans, the family, having built a feared media conglomerate over more than a century, are used to planning in terms of generations.
This was in the year 2004 that the 4th Viscount Rothermere, the distinguished proprietor of the Daily Mail, failed in his attempt to acquire the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.
By Rothermere’s assessment, the failure pleased the media magnate because it would have created a stable of rightwing newspapers powerful enough to rival the “unique political leverage” of his publications.
The reserved Rothermere, however, was able to adopt a patient strategy. The publications were again put up for sale in 2023. From that point, two prospective owners have entered and exited, both after staff rebellions over their suitability. Rothermere has now made his move.

With British politics seemingly sliding to the right, there are predictable apprehensions about combining the Mail and Telegraph at a time when both have been increasing reporting of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
