Out of every adult-oriented cartoon movies I have ever watched, no other has remained with me as much as the terror-laced conclusion of a explicitly bloody and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, the Spanish writer-director created a grim, bleak , frequently brutal world with several minor , desolate twinges of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from a desire to expand animation further, the filmmaker explained that it was rather an effort to convey a widespread, multicultural theme concerning “the common origin of all wars.”
That message is expressed through a band of colorful pastel bears , clearly based on a famous line of lovable figures.
Maturing in a culture built around warmongering as well as the war machine, many of these creatures are obsessed with killing unicorns, due to a holy book which states the bears they were once rulers of the woodland, before the unicorns forced them out.
A few haven’t fully fallen for the propaganda, and would rather experiment with drugs or fornicate outdoors.
Unlike their gentle counterparts, these bright beings have visible genitals , obvious urges.
For one particularly cruel, pessimistic creature, the bear named Bluey, the battle with the unicorns becomes a route to power — and particularly to authority above his more tender, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
The character acts as a tormentor , a seeming sociopath , and when terror dominates his group and takes his fellow soldiers one by one, he grabs more and more control on his own behalf, through ever more gory, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are experiencing their own horror, through an expanding, destructive monster in their forest.
“Initially, it seems like a comedy,” the director stated. “But then it turns into a more dramatic and sorrowful movie. And ultimately, it’s a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars starts out resembling among the playful films from a renowned animator, which find a wicked pleasure in allowing animated figures curse, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Afterward it evolves into more akin to a more grim work from the same artist, with increasingly visual gore and a palpable relation to the real suffering of conflict.
Ultimately, it becomes a full-on Grand Guignol carnage.
The horror which makes this a perfect Halloween watch starts a lot earlier than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the hardcore lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who desire to view a movie they’ve never watched previously, and are able to withstand a narrative which delivers absolutely no punches.
Watch it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the finale will burrow under your skin and linger.
