The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Fan Response

One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Does the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
