Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
