Alright, what did you think of the past year in your home? Did it seem truly wonderful as people post on social media? Packed with top marks for the children and elaborate costume celebrations for the grownups? Maybe it felt like a ocean of disappointment with only occasional entertaining highlights? And was any of it genuine, or have we all become seven-fingered synthetic personas with unrealistic smiles?
I've corralled my thoughts for a chat, whether they wanted to or not, to reflect on the crucial thing in twelve months: which releases we played the most. Without further ado:
Pikmin
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my definitive list."
Meanwhile, on mobile, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "attempting to locate reasonable healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I even asked. I respect that.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her character has a blooming utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her eldest sister has in the real world.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Minecraft
Any time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am engaging in this to build character so he can mature and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted strategy digital pastime, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that constantly evolve their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to trap you with fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the start. I wish I could eviscerate my issues so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after appropriate hospitality.
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was late to it. And it is exceptional. It just gets each element right. Its gameplay loop is a fantastic concept, but the powers behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I could play any time. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute pinnacle of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I mentioned how a glitch in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I valued even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that in the exact way, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an excellent judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I acknowledge that it has great art and is ideal if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but so was many less comfortable things.
Close call between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and expensive game releases. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or phone use, but it burns like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the past.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the heat death of the universe.
The Witcher 4.
