The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
