A charity drive is aiming to propel a Palestinian lullaby to the peak of the festive singles chart. The project hopes to send support to communities in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian artistic heritage.
Renowned figure Brian Eno, who performs on the track, stated that the single 'Lullaby' represents a opportunity to show solidarity with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He noted the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“It would be fantastic if that came to pass, yes,” he stated. “I won't be completely disappointed if it doesn’t, holiday tracks are a thing unto themselves.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the version of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the song's powerful central theme.
“The song holds a deeply meaningful spot for a lot of people,” Barghouti explained. “The essence is that I would prefer a dignified death than live a life without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we want to live a life of dignity that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The track was produced in the wake of a major charity concert held in late summer. First conceived to be captured during the live event, the rendition was cut from the show due to the event running long.
The impressive roster of performers appearing on Lullaby features a range of prominent voices from the music world. All participated in the earlier concert, which managed to collect a considerable total for relief efforts.
Lullaby was produced by a team of producers and composers. The track features a mix of the traditional Arabic lyrics with new English lyrics.
The organizers behind the initiative have clarified that their objective is to generate maximum funds for a charitable pot. These donations will be channeled to projects in Palestine through an established charity.
“We haven't set a specific target,” a spokesperson explained. “We aim for whatever we can get. Obviously, the more the merrier. It all goes out to Gaza.”
The context in the territory was described as its widespread damage, with a huge proportion of property said to be in ruins or severely impacted.
“Given that reality, a couple of million won't make an enormous impact. But I think what truly matters is above all making this cause better known and showing the human dimension of the story.”
The single 'Lullaby' is launching on Friday. Additionally, a video of the solidarity show will be made ready to watch on a popular streaming site from later in the month.
