An speeding car while fleeing law enforcement crashed into a crowded nightspot early on Saturday, killing 4 individuals and wounding eleven in a vintage district of Florida, known for its entertainment scene and visitors.
Aerial patrol team with the local law enforcement agency observed the car driving recklessly on a highway at about 12.40am after authorities said the silver sedan had been observed street racing in another area, as per a law enforcement statement.
The state road police caught up with the vehicle and attempted to execute a maneuver that entails striking a rear fender of a escaping car to make it to spin out, known as a precision immobilization technique, but it was unsuccessful.
Highway patrol officers “ended pursuit” as the vehicle raced toward the historic Ybor City district near the city center, local authorities reported. Eventually, the driver lost control of the car and hit more than a dozen individuals outside the establishment, officials said.
3 individuals died at the location and a fourth victim died at a hospital. By Saturday morning, a fifth victim was hospitalized in critical state, and eight other patients were being treated at local hospitals but were classified as stable, authorities said. 2 additional individuals experienced slight injuries and declined treatment at the scene. All 15 people are adults.
“The incident today was a senseless tragedy, we are with the loved ones of the deceased and everyone who were impacted,” the Tampa top law enforcement officer said in a message.
Officers named the alleged driver as 22-year Silas Sampson, who was booked on the weekend and is being held at the Hillsborough county detention facility.
Court documents showed the suspect has been charged with four charges of reckless driving causing death and 4 charges of serious fleeing or eluding with severe harm or death. Each are serious crimes. No attorney was listed for the accused.
“The community is mourning this loss,” remarked the city’s mayor, previously served as Tampa’s initial woman top cop, in a post on online platforms.
“My thoughts are with everyone affected. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and efforts are underway to get explanations,” the statement added.
In recent years, some states and municipal authorities have advocated to limit the employment of high-speed car chases to protect both civilians and officers. After a rise in fatalities, a recent study supported by the federal authorities called for police chases to be minimized, explaining that the risk to individuals, personnel and bystanders often exceeds the immediate need to take someone into custody.
Still, the state has intensified efforts on the tactics, with the region’s road police amending its policies to loosen restrictions on the use of car chases and pit maneuvers. The justice department-backed analysis characterized those tactics as “high-risk” and “controversial”.
