NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the need to directing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live there, the community will always live within me and my work," he affirmed.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria digs.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
